About Chair Four

Meet Alice Hornby.

Alice Hornby Director

In my backyard sits an old ski chairlift. For me, it’s a little dream realised, but also a symbol of something much bigger. That chairlift, chair number four,  is the inspiration behind my practice and the way I work with people.

If you’ve ever been skiing, you’ll know the feeling of being “on the ski run.” You’re focused, moving,  reacting to what’s right in front of you. There’s not much time to think - just do. Work can feel exactly the same. Busy. Fast. Sometimes smooth, sometimes bumpy.

But then you get on the chairlift.

You sit down. The noise quietens. You rise above the ski slope. You can see more clearly: the path you’ve taken, the terrain ahead, where things got tricky, where others are choosing different lines. You can catch your breath, reset, and decide how you want to approach the next run.

That shift - from doing to thinking - is powerful.

I believe that clarity changes everything. After almost 20 years in corporate human resources, organisational development and senior leadership roles, I have created a place that enables people to ‘get off the ski run and onto the chairlift’. A place where people have the space to seek clarity, build confidence and be supported to lead effectively.

Chair Four is about creating that space, intentionally. My role is to sit alongside you on that metaphorical chairlift and offer tailored support through bespoke human resources consulting and coaching solutions.

Sometimes we’re looking at leadership challenges.
Sometimes it’s career direction, performance, or communication.
Sometimes it’s strategic planning or navigating change.

Often, it’s simply creating the time and structure to think well. That is something many of us rarely give ourselves.

I bring experience across human resource management, organisational development, leadership, culture and change, but importantly, I also bring curiosity, thoughtful challenge and practical support. This isn’t about abstract theory or quick fixes. It’s about helping you see clearly, make sound decisions, and be at your best in the work that matters.

Because clarity doesn’t happen by accident.

You have to get off the run to find it.
